The first night of the TGL was held this week...did you catch it? It was shown at 2am UK time meaning that next to nobody would be willing to watch it from this side of the pond. The only real frustration around what otherwise looked like an incredible opening night.
It looks like an incredible set up and the format is interesting. Indoor golf, but to the absolute MAX! The screen for starters is 24x the size of a regular indoor launch monitor screen. The players play from various lies (fairway, rough and sand) and its the real deal! Then inside around 50 yards they move to an enormous green complex on a rotating platform meaning almost any shot imaginable it available including greenside bunkers. And essentially unlimited different greenside scenarios and pin positions.
If you want to look at the product as a direct comparison to LIV golf you would have to say that at least they have done something completely different to differentiate themselves from the standard week to week PGA tour event.
No doubt as the weeks go on there will be many more stories and plenty more content for socials, a measure which everything seems to go through these days.
I've enjoyed what I have seen of the inaugural event, the players looked a little out of their comfort zone to start with but then began with the banter which you normally don't have access to and there was some really impressive golf played.
I think it is a shame they haven't leant into the team concept a little more with team uniforms, I suppose this is also due to each of the players having their own respective contracts with different brands. However, this was a great chance for golf to move away from the stuffy collars only rules, create more of a trendy look and team feel but hopefully this will change as the product matures and fans buy into the different teams over time.
Tiger and Rory are certainly huge attractions as well. Its great to be able to see Tiger play, particularly because there is very little walking involved which seems to be his biggest barrier to more regular golf. And hey, if there is a chance to watch Tiger Woods hit golf balls you can always count me in!
